iHuman Institute is a new international effort established as a research institute located on the campus of ShanghaiTech University. The institute is a gateway to the world of Shanghai life science research. What makes iHuman Institute special is that it is focused exclusively on the basic and applied science of human cell signaling, integrating multiple tools for scientific discovery, and bringing together leading researchers throughout the world. Cell surface receptors and their related intracellular proteins are responsible for human cellular communications with each other and their environment, and are involved in a wide range of physiological activities. Such a central role in human biology makes cell signaling the target for intervention for tuning physiological responses and fighting numerous conditions and diseases. These proteins are central to understanding the evolution of mankind and human cognition at a molecular level.
iHuman Institute has research groups in the field of Chemical and Cell Biology, Chemistry, Antibody Development, Computational Chemistry, Imaging, Structural Biology, System Biology, and Translational Biology. The institute has the feeling of a team with combined efforts working closely together from different disciplines of science all excited to decipher the mysteries in human cell signaling. Basic science is at the core of the iHuman Institute, with direct application to drug discovery.
Academic Disciplines:
We seek a research fellow or research assistant professor applicant to engage in an integrative structural biology study of a cellular signaling pathway (e.g., GPCR signaling cascades). The candidate will contribute to the collaboration between the Sali research group at University of California, San Francisco, USA (http://salilab.org) and the Stevens research group at iHuman Institute of ShanghaiTech University, Shanghai, China (http://www.shanghaitech.edu.cn/en/en_iHuman_Overview.asp). The goal will be to develop a spatiotemporal model of the selected system, based on data from a variety of experimental techniques, such as X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, super resolution optical microscopy, and others, generated at iHuman. The fellow will spend considerable time initially at UCSF, transitioning into a tenure track faculty position at iHuman. The position will be funded for 5 years at a very competitive international faculty startup level.
Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate
1、Background in computational structural biology;
2、Experience in designing and coding computational algorithms, statistical mechanics, and statistics;
3、Willingness to learn about integrative structural biology methods and applications.
Applications:
Please email your cover letter, including a cv and names of at least 3 referees, to Ray Stevens (stevens@shangaitech.edu.cn) and Hilary Mahon (hilary@salilab.org).
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary and startup fund are highly competitive, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishment. ShanghaiTech also offers a comprehensive benefit package to employees and their eligible dependents, including full housing benefits.
