Lesson: 課文

1) Only use your horn in case of an emergency. Never beep at people to tell them you are going to pass. This is one of the biggest differences between China's driving culture and the Western.

2) Only pull the emergency brake when you park the car. Never pull the emergency break at a stoplight.

3) Get regular tune-ups and oil changes whenever your car needs it.

4) Keep your windshield clean and clear of dead bugs and debris.

5) It is illegal to drive with a cracked or broken windshield.

6) Putting the pedal to the medal may be fun, but if you exceed the speed limit you will get a steep fine.

Dialogue(對話)

Bob: Let's get into your convertible and put the pedal to the medal.

Sue: I just got a tune up. Now my car is faster than ever.

Bob: Is that all?

Sue: No, I also got a new horn. Now in case of emergencies my horn is twice as loud, so it is twice as safe.

Bob: Safety first is the best policy. Look at that pick up truck, he is turning into oncoming traffic.

Sue: That is not safe.

Bob: Look, his windshield is also cracked, that is against the law.

Sue: I am glad I keep my car in good shape.

Bob: Some people treat their cars like their boyfriends or girlfriends. Most Americans even name their cars. Did you name yours?

Sue: Yes, I named mine Brad Pitt.

Bob: I should have guessed.

Dialogue(對話)

Present Tense Dialogue

Bob: Hey, Susie, that is a nice new car you have.

Sue: Thanks, I had been saving up for it for three years, ever since I heard your lecture on the benefits of automobiles.

Bob: That's great, but I thought you were going to buy the hatchback so you could transport a lot of things in the back?

Sue: I was, but the convertible is so much more attractive. Plus its normal trunk is fairly large.

Bob: If it makes you happy, you can't beat that.

Sue: That's the truth. Cars were created to make people happy and make work more convenient.

Past Tense Dialogue

Bob: Sue, what kind of car will you buy next?

Sue: Since I already have a convertible, I think my second car will be a hatchback or a pick up truck.

Bob: Really, what would you do with a pick up truck?

Sue: It could help my friends move, and I could transport all the new furniture I plan to buy.

Bob: A pick up truck does give you more independence.

Sue: You can't beat that.

Bob: You can't beat independence.

Sue: Do you need a ride back to the university?

Bob: Yes, I am late for my own lecture. Step on it! (Please drive fast)
